Bungay Cricket Club has been left facing a £2,000 repair bill after vandals sprayed weedkiller across its square at Maltings Meadow.
The damage was discovered after weedkiller was applied under cover of darkness, devastating the wicket just weeks before the start of the new season. The club says it will now have to resow the entire square at significant cost.
Club chair Jim Howlett described the act as “mindless vandalism” and said volunteers were angry and frustrated but determined to recover.
“It’s going to cost the club at least £2,000 to do the work necessary at a time when resources are already tight,” he said. “This is money that would have been invested in further developing our youth and women’s programme.”
The club had been preparing to field three new teams this season, including a women’s hardball side and new Under-9 and Under-17 junior teams.
Mr Howlett said the club is now reviewing CCTV footage and has reported the incident to police.
Officers are appealing for information. Anyone who knows anything about the incident is asked to call 101 and quote crime reference 36/11067/26.
The club says it remains determined to restore the square and ensure cricket can resume as soon as possible.
