Extreme Heat Warning for East Suffolk

An Amber Warning for Extreme Heat has been issued as a hot spell is expected to bring a risk of impacts across Suffolk early next week.

The Met Office alert covers Monday (22nd) and Tuesday (23rd) and warns of possible health risks, travel disruption and increased pressure on local services.

Forecasters say vulnerable people are most likely to be affected, but the wider population could also experience problems including dehydration, sunburn, heat exhaustion and other heat-related illnesses.

Daytime highs into the 30s Celsius are possible, along with warm nights. Sea temperatures along the Suffolk coast are around 15 or 16 Celsius.

Temperatures should be less hot right by the beach - but with more people expected to head to the coast, as well as rivers and lakes, there are also concerns about an increased risk of water safety incidents.

The warning highlights the potential for delays on roads and railways, as well as possible changes to working practices and daily routines.

There is also an increased chance that heat-sensitive equipment and systems could fail, leading to power cuts or disruption to other services for homes and businesses.

Residents are being advised to stay hydrated, avoid prolonged exposure to the sun during the hottest part of the day and check on vulnerable friends, neighbours and relatives.
