Police have named a man who died following a road traffic collision in Saxmundham, as his family pay tribute to his life.
Officers were called to the A12 at the junction with the B1119 Rendham Road just before 2pm on 4 December, following reports of a two-vehicle collision involving a grey Nissan Almera and a red Mazda.
Despite the efforts of medical personnel, the driver of the Nissan Almera – the sole occupant of the vehicle – sadly died at the scene.
Subject to formal inquest proceedings, he has been identified as Ian Chatten, aged 86, from Framlingham.
In a tribute issued by his family, Ian was described as a much-loved father and grandfather, a skilled tradesman with a strong reputation for quality workmanship, and a man with wide-ranging interests. He had a lifelong love of motorbikes, sport and music, and performed with local bands well into later life. Family members said he was warm, sociable and greatly valued a good conversation, adding that he will be deeply missed by all who knew him.
A man aged in his 30s was arrested on suspicion of causing death by careless driving and remains on bail while investigations continue.
Police are continuing to appeal for witnesses and are asking any motorists with dashcams who were travelling in the area at the time to review their footage.
Anyone with information is asked to contact the Joint Norfolk & Suffolk Serious Collision Investigation Unit, quoting reference 37/68702/25, via the Suffolk Police website or by calling 101.
