Mild temperatures have helped prompt an early spring danger alert for visitors to Dunwich Heath following early sightings of adders.
A small number of reports suggest the snakes have emerged early to bask in sunny patches across the heath. Adders are the UK’s only venomous snake, but they are typically shy and prefer to avoid contact with people and dogs.
Walkers are being encouraged to remain aware of their surroundings, stick to marked paths and keep dogs under control, particularly in areas of heathland where adders are known to live.
There is no indication of increased risk, and organisers stress this is not intended to alarm visitors. Instead, it serves as a seasonal reminder that wildlife becomes more active during warmer spells.
Adders commonly emerge from hibernation in early spring and can often be seen sunning themselves to regulate their body temperature.
Visitors to Dunwich Heath can continue to enjoy the area as normal, while taking sensible precautions and respecting local wildlife.
