Suffolk County Council elections due to take place in May have been postponed, meaning voters across East Suffolk will not head to the polls as planned.
The decision was confirmed by the Local Government Secretary in the House of Commons, with the elections now delayed until 2027. The move forms part of a wider shake-up of local government, which is expected to see some councils abolished or reorganised.
Ministers say postponing the vote is intended to support that restructuring process and avoid elections being held for authorities that may soon change or cease to exist. The government has stressed that the “vast majority” of council elections across England will still go ahead.
However, opposition MPs across east Suffolk have criticised the decision, warning that delaying the vote could disenfranchise millions of voters and reduce local democratic accountability.
The reorganisation aims to simplify local government structures and reduce duplication between authorities, with affected councils requesting election delays as part of the process.
Residents are being advised to follow updates from Suffolk County Council and local authorities for further information on how the changes will affect local governance and future election arrangements.
