A metal detectorist has uncovered a spent mortar shell on Benacre beach near Kessingland, prompting a bomb disposal response.
The discovery was made on Tuesday (26th August), when the individual reported finding a “suspicious item” buried in the sand. Gorleston Coastguard attended and established a cordon around the site before calling in an explosive ordnance disposal team.
Experts examined the device and confirmed it was a spent mortar shell, which was then removed from the beach for safe disposal.
The incident is the latest in a series of finds along the Suffolk coast. In July, Coastguard teams assisted bomb disposal officers with a controlled explosion of another mortar shell on a beach near Lowestoft.
Officials say while such discoveries are rare, they serve as a reminder of the wartime ordnance that can occasionally still be uncovered along the coastline.
The Coastguard advises anyone who comes across a suspicious object on a beach not to touch or move it, but to call 999 and ask for the Coastguard.
No injuries were reported and the beach has since been declared safe.
