A physiotherapist at the James Paget Hospital has been shortlisted for a national award after setting up a dedicated cancer physiotherapy service for patients.

Sam Nelson, a Clinical Specialist Macmillan Physiotherapist based in Gorleston, has been recognised in the Rising Star category at the Macmillan Professional Excellence Awards.

Since joining the hospital less than two years ago, Sam has led the development of a service designed to support patients undergoing and recovering from cancer treatment. He works across the hospital’s haematology ward and outpatient clinics, helping people access physiotherapy more quickly.

The service aims to improve patients’ quality of life, supporting them to maintain independence and return to everyday activities.

Sam said physiotherapy can make a significant difference, helping patients regain confidence in simple tasks such as reaching for items at home or getting out and about. He also highlighted how it can support people in returning to hobbies and family activities that are important to them.

One patient, who had been bedbound during treatment, later achieved their goal of walking along the beach again — illustrating the impact of the service.

The role is funded by Macmillan Cancer Support, with additional support from cancer care teams at the hospital.

Sam has previously been recognised locally, winning a staff award for his work supporting patients through cancer treatment.

The latest nomination highlights the growing impact of the service for patients across the James Paget Hospital and surrounding communities.
