A fire at a pig farm in Cookley, near Halesworth, has killed around 75 pigs and left others needing veterinary care.
Suffolk Fire and Rescue Service was called at 7:27am this morning (Monday 29th September) to reports of a building fire at Peddards Pigs Ltd.
On arrival, firefighters found an agricultural building — measuring about 30 by 20 metres and housing around 400 pigs — well alight. Multiple fires were discovered inside.
The surviving pigs had already been released before crews arrived, but many sustained severe burns. A vet attended the scene to provide treatment and, where necessary, to humanely euthanise animals that could not survive their injuries.
Five crews from Framlingham, Wrentham, Leiston, Bungay and Saxmundham attended, supported by a water carrier due to limited supply. The fire was surrounded and extinguished by 10:30am.
The Environment Agency also attended the scene. Suffolk Fire and Rescue Service has confirmed a fire investigation will be carried out.
