Minsmere near Dunwich may be one of the RSPB’s largest and most famous nature reserves, but this weekend people across east Suffolk are being encouraged to help wildlife closer to home.
The RSPB Big Garden Birdwatch, the world’s largest garden wildlife survey, is taking place and invites residents to spend time counting birds in their gardens, balconies or local green spaces.
The annual event provides vital information on bird populations and helps conservationists track how species are faring across the UK. Last year, more than 590,000 people took part nationwide, recording over 9.1 million birds.
House Sparrows topped the national list last year, but organisers are keen to see whether they can hold on to the top spot this time around.
The RSPB says the survey is suitable for all ages and experience levels, with participants simply asked to count the birds they see during a short period and submit their results online.
While reserves like Minsmere play a key role in protecting wildlife, the charity says gardens and urban spaces are just as important for many species.
People across east Suffolk are being encouraged to take part and help build a clearer picture of how garden birds are doing locally and nationally - with all the details here.
