A man from Carlton Colville has been jailed for thirty years after attempting to murder his partner during a violent knife attack.
Ryan Leggett, 35, of Lowestoft Road, was sentenced at Ipswich Crown Court to twenty-seven years in prison and a further three years on licence. He must serve at least two-thirds of his sentence before the parole board can consider his release.
He was also made subject to an indefinite restraining order, banning any contact with the victim or her family.
Leggett was found guilty of attempted murder following a six-day trial. The attack happened after the victim returned home unexpectedly to find him in bed with another man. During a confrontation, Leggett armed himself with knives and stabbed the woman several times, leaving her with life-threatening injuries including a punctured lung and internal bleeding.
The victim later spoke of ongoing trauma, including post-traumatic stress, scarring and anxiety linked to the court process.
Sentencing, the judge described Leggett’s actions as “cowardly” and praised the bravery of those who helped save the woman’s life, along with the police and paramedics who attended.
Detective Constable Sophie Moore, who led the investigation, said: “Ryan Leggett subjected the victim to a frenzied attack of extreme violence — it’s a miracle he did not kill her. I want to pay tribute to her bravery in helping us secure this conviction.”
Police are urging anyone experiencing abuse to seek help. Victims can contact Suffolk Constabulary or the Suffolk Domestic Abuse Helpline on 0800 977 5690.
