Highly pathogenic avian influenza H5N1 has been confirmed in two wild birds found in Lowestoft.
A dead common gull and a dead gannet collected from South Beach have both tested positive for the virus.
Bird keepers are being urged to remain vigilant and to practise strict biosecurity measures to help reduce the risk of spread.
Members of the public are advised:
- Do not pick up or touch dead or sick wild birds.
- Do not touch wild bird feathers or surfaces contaminated with droppings.
- If you keep poultry or other birds, wash your hands and clean and disinfect your footwear before tending to them.
Anyone who finds dead wild birds is asked to report them using the Government’s online reporting service or by calling the Defra helpline on 03459 33 55 77. Reports are triaged and not all birds will be collected.
Officials stress that wild birds can die from a range of diseases and injuries, and not all dead birds will have been infected with avian influenza.
