A community project to restore Kirkley Ham is looking for volunteers after receiving funding to begin revitalising the popular green space.
The Friends of Kirkley Ham is seeking people interested in nature conservation following a £2,050 grant from East Suffolk councillors Peter Byatt, Louise Gooch and Malcolm Pitchers through their Enabling Communities Budget.
The money will pay for a specialist contractor to carry out initial work clearing areas of overgrown gorse and bramble, helping create more light and space for wildlife and plants.
Kirkley Ham is a seven-acre site owned by Suffolk County Council. Together with Fen Park and Pakefield Wood, it forms part of a green corridor along Tom Crisp Way. In recent years, overgrown vegetation, fly-tipping, littering and antisocial behaviour have affected the site.
The Friends group is now looking for volunteers to help identify and protect wildlife, take part in practical conservation work and assist with regular maintenance.
The group was established by Kirkley People's Forum after local residents expressed strong support for restoring the Ham. Earlier this year, it signed a lease with Suffolk County Council to manage the site for the benefit of both wildlife and the local community.
