South Lowestoft - Incident Update

Suffolk Police have confirmed the incident in Lowestoft this weekend has been safely resolved.

Officers were called to Grosvenor Road at approximately 6.45pm yesterday, Saturday 18th July, to a report of a disturbance and a physical altercation believed to involve a small group of people.

Officers attended and a potential male suspect was seen in St John’s Road who then climbed onto the roof of a property in St John’s Road.

Police, with specialist officers including negotiators, were joined by the fire and ambulance services.

The situation was safely resolved and the road closures were lifted shortly before 10.20am this morning, Sunday 19th July.

The suspect, a 28-year-old man, has been detained by police and has subsequently been arrested on suspicion of assault (GBH), robbery, assaulting police officers and criminal damage.

Residents will continue to see a police presence in the area while enquiries continue

Police would like to thank residents in the St John’s Road area for their patience and understanding.

Chief Superintendent Becky Mears said: “We understand the considerable impact this has had on residents and all those affected by the incident and the road closures.

“Considering the location of the incident, the priority of all the emergency services in attendance was rightly the safety of everyone affected. This included the residents of St John’s Road, the arrested party and the emergency workers present who were working in what could have been an incredibly dangerous situation.

“I would like to thank the residents in the St John’s Road area (pictured) who I am sure have been particularly affected by this serious incident and to anyone who else who has been disrupted by the road closures and activity of the emergency services.

“Lastly, I would ask that anyone with any information in relation to the initial reported altercation and assault or the resulting incident to please come forward and contact police.”

Shortly after being called to the initial altercation an injured man was located. He was supported by officers and paramedics and taken to hospital for treatment. The man, aged 40, was subsequently arrested on suspicion of robbery and taken to Great Yarmouth Police Investigation Centre for questioning, where he currently remains.

In connection with the initial incident, a 13-year-old boy was arrested at 7.35pm on 18 July on suspicion of common assault, obstructing a police officer and assaulting an emergency worker. He was taken to Great Yarmouth PIC for questioning, where he currently remains.
