A crowd of birdwatchers gathered in Lowestoft yesterday daytime after a rare red-footed falcon was spotted near the giant dragonfly mural on Rotterdam Road.

One local twitcher on the scene believed the visiting bird of prey was an elusive female.

Onlookers turned out with binoculars and cameras to catch sight of the unusual avian visitor perched right by the painted insect.

The near-threatened species breeds predominantly in Eastern Europe and migrates to southern Africa, making its brief Suffolk coastal stopover an extraordinary sight for the town.
