With hot temperatures on the way, a new campaign has been launched across east Suffolk to help reduce the risk of wildfires and protect wildlife habitats along the coast and countryside.
Wildlife Wise, working with Suffolk Fire and Rescue Service, has launched the Wildfire Free Suffolk campaign during Wildfire Awareness Month.
The initiative comes after Suffolk Fire and Rescue Service attended 310 outdoor fires between January and mid-November last year — more than 100 higher than the previous year.
New signs are being placed in high-risk locations, including roads, car parks and footpaths near wildlife sites, warning people about the dangers of disposable barbecues, campfires and discarded smoking materials.
Areas along the Suffolk coast, including popular visitor locations around Southwold and nearby heathland and woodland sites, are among those where organisers want to increase awareness.
Temperatures could reach the low 30s Celsius for some over the Bank Holiay weekend - and people are being urged to avoid lighting barbecues or campfires near dry grass, heathland or woodland, take litter home and dispose of cigarettes and vaping products responsibly.
Officials say even a small spark can quickly spread during warm and dry conditions, potentially damaging habitats and putting wildlife at risk.
If anyone spots a fire outdoors, they are advised to move to safety and contact emergency services immediately.
Police and emergency service prevention work is ongoing.
