The Old Market was once the centre of life in Beccles. In Anglo-Saxon times it served as a fish market, while by the 19th century it had become a venue for travelling theatres and menageries. Historical records even suggest a parade of elephants and camels passed through the square in 1868.
Designers were asked to create proposals that introduce more greenery to help reduce the effects of traffic pollution, improve accessibility for people with disabilities and work within the existing layout of the site.
The identities of the finalists are being kept anonymous during the voting period to ensure a fair judging process.
The winning design must be delivered within a £50,000 budget. The successful designer will receive a £500 prize and a commemorative plaque.
Entries have already been reviewed by Beccles Town Council and the Vibrant Beccles group, with the final decision now set to involve the wider community.
The exhibition runs at Beccles Museum until the 8th August, giving residents plenty of opportunity to view the designs and have their say on the future of the historic Old Market.
