Sunrise Film Festival is one of Suffolk’s most vibrant cultural events, recognised nationally as both a BIFA and Grierson qualifying festival. Since its launch in 2021, the festival has grown into the UK’s largest celebration of diverse stories and underrepresented filmmakers, taking place annually in the coastal town of Lowestoft.
The festival is run by a dedicated non‑profit Community Interest Company and is known for its warm, grassroots atmosphere. It champions accessibility, inclusivity, and creative opportunity, particularly within communities that are often overlooked. Each year, Sunrise showcases an impressive programme of independent films, with the 2026 edition featuring 263 films from 34 countries, including a remarkable 68% F‑Rated lineup, highlighting women‑led and women‑centred storytelling.
Filmmakers and audiences alike praise the festival for its friendly team, thoughtful curation, and strong commitment to supporting emerging talent. Beyond screenings, Sunrise offers talks, networking opportunities, and a welcoming environment for both industry professionals and local film lovers.
The festival also plays an important role in the local community. All entry fees and ticket sales directly support the organisation’s ongoing work, including creative opportunities for young people in the area. Volunteers are central to the festival’s success, with roles ranging from committee involvement to stewarding and film pre‑selection.
Located on the Suffolk coast, Lowestoft provides an inspiring backdrop for the event, easily accessible by train from across the UK. Sunrise Film Festival continues to grow each year, strengthening its reputation as a joyful, inclusive celebration of independent cinema.
East Suffolk One caught up with Joshua Freemantle ahead of the Sunrise Film Festival 2026 in Lowestoft to discuss the upcoming event.
