Cardiac Risk in the Young (CRY): Supporting Young Lives

Every week in the UK, at least 12 young people lose their lives to undiagnosed heart conditions.
Cardiac Risk in the Young (CRY) is a national charity working to change this—through awareness, screening, research, and support for affected families

Who They Are

Founded in 1995, CRY is dedicated to reducing the number of young sudden cardiac deaths (YSCD).
The charity works closely with medical experts, families, and communities to identify risks early and provide life-saving interventions where possible

What They Do

CRY delivers a wide range of services to support both prevention and care:

• Heart Screening Programmes
  Providing cardiac screening for young people to detect hidden conditions before they become life-threatening. 

• Research Funding
  Supporting medical research into the causes, diagnosis, and treatment of cardiac conditions affecting young people. 

• Support for Families
  Offering bereavement support and guidance for families affected by sudden cardiac death. 

• Public Awareness and Education
  Publishing accessible medical information and raising awareness of cardiac risks across communities. 

• Specialist Services
  Funding cardiac referral, screening, and pathology services at leading UK hospitals.

Toby Chenery Story:

On 25th February 2025, Toby’s family experienced a devastating and life-changing loss. Toby, a much-loved 23-year-old, had spent the evening with friends playing football before returning home and going to bed, appearing as fit and healthy as ever. Tragically, he passed away in his sleep that night.

Toby is remembered as an exceptionally kind and generous individual, someone who consistently went out of his way to support others. In the months following his passing, many stories have been shared that highlight his quiet acts of kindness and the positive impact he had on those around him.

In honour of Toby’s life and the lasting difference he made, his family have established a memorial fundraising initiative. Their aim is to create a meaningful legacy by raising funds to host a cardiac screening event within their local community.

Through this effort, they hope to increase awareness of undiagnosed heart conditions and help prevent other families from experiencing such a sudden and tragic loss.
