Lowestoft traveller encampment leaves but Police investigations continue

Police dealt with multiple reports of disruption in Lowestoft over the weekend following the arrival of around 40 caravans.

Police received reports from a number of businesses on Whapload Road, London Road North, Kirkley Rise and Station Square concerning large groups of people causing disruption.

Officers attended and dealt with offences and moved groups on. Managers and business owners were also spoken to. There were no reports of injuries linked to the incidents.

The encampment left Lowestoft on Monday morning (24th August).

Police say they are continuing to liaise with local businesses and are reviewing reports and available CCTV to establish the full circumstances and identify anyone responsible for offences.

Anyone who witnessed the incidents and has not yet spoken to officers, or anyone who has not yet reported a related incident, is being asked to contact police.

Two smaller unauthorised encampments were also reported in Corton and Carlton Colville last week. Both left over the weekend and police received no reports of issues connected with either encampment.

Inspector Mark Jackson said police take reports of antisocial behaviour and criminality seriously and would continue working with local partners to address concerns.

Meanwhile, Lowestoft businesses were being encouraged to make use of local safety initiatives while travellers are currently in the area.

Lowestoft Vision says it recognises the concerns the current situation caused for business owners and staff and encouraged businesses to use the BID-funded safety initiatives available to them.

Businesses were also being encouraged to use the ALERT app and ShopSafe radio network, where available, to share information and raise concerns with neighbouring businesses.

The ALERT app is free to use and is monitored by the new CCTV Control Room, helping information to be shared with relevant partners.
