Vandalism at Suffolk Wildlife Trust Reserve

Suffolk Wildlife Trust has condemned a series of vandal attacks on bird hides at Carlton Marshes Nature Reserve, near Lowestoft.

The Trust says four hides have been damaged over the past couple of months, with hate symbols burned into the wood and noticeboards and window fittings torn off.

Suffolk Police has confirmed it is aware of the incidents and that its rural crime team is investigating.

Hugh Braidwood, the Trust’s Engagement and Visitor Operations Manager, said the damage was both upsetting and frustrating for staff, volunteers, and visitors.

The nature reserve, which covers nearly 1,000 acres of wetlands, attracts birdwatchers and wildlife enthusiasts from across Suffolk and beyond. The hides offer visitors quiet spaces to observe species such as marsh harriers, bitterns, and bearded tits.

The Trust has urged anyone who witnesses antisocial behaviour or suspicious activity at the site to report it to police.

Suffolk Wildlife Trust said it remains committed to keeping the reserve open and welcoming for everyone, despite the damage.

Anyone with information is asked to contact Suffolk Police via the rural crime team or through the Suffolk Police website
