Repair works are due to take place later this month on Lowestoft’s South Pier to fix damaged glass panels forming part of the town’s tidal flood wall.
The glass panels, installed in 2023, were vandalised earlier this year, with two now needing replacement at a total cost of £25,225. The flood defence itself — which sits beneath the panels — remains fully operational and unaffected.
Work will be carried out by Flood Control International on behalf of East Suffolk Council from Monday 17th November, with completion expected by Friday 21st November.
During this time, the road behind the South Pier amusements will be closed to the public, with diversions in place.
Cllr Mark Packard, East Suffolk’s cabinet member for Planning and Coastal Management, said the damage was “a real shame” given the cost to taxpayers.
“The glass panels form a vital part of the aesthetic of the area, maintaining views across the marina,” he said. “It’s important to carry out the repairs now, outside of the summer season and before we move into the winter period. Keeping the area tidy helps enhance the pier as part of the Council’s wider seafront vision for Lowestoft.”
The Council says the works will restore the appearance of the seafront while ensuring the area continues to play a key role in local flood protection and regeneration plans.
