Police are urging drivers in Lowestoft to take extra precautions following an increase in thefts from motor vehicles.

Officers say a number of simple steps can help reduce the risk of becoming a target. These include always locking vehicles, even when leaving them for a short time, and ensuring windows and sunroofs are fully closed.

Residents are also advised to remove valuables from sight, including items like bags, tools and electronic devices, and to avoid leaving any clues such as sat nav holders or charging cables.

Additional measures include parking in well-lit, busy areas, securing number plates and using locking wheel nuts to protect alloys.

For vehicles with keyless entry systems, police recommend keeping keys away from doors and windows and using signal-blocking pouches where possible.

Owners of vans are also encouraged to mark tools to make them less attractive to thieves.

Police are asking anyone who sees suspicious behaviour in their area to report it, as information from the public can help prevent further offences.

Further crime prevention advice is available via Suffolk Police and partner organisations.
