Wintry Weather for East Suffolk

East Suffolk snow on Saturday afternoon made for tricky driving conditions

There's a warning of more snow and ice for east Suffolk, after the first significant snowfall of 2026 caused travel disruption.

Heavy snow fell on Saturday (3rd January), leaving motorists facing delays on key routes including the A12 around Wrentham, Wangford and Blythburgh, as well as the A146 between the Lowestoft and Beccles areas. Drivers reported slow-moving traffic as wintry conditions made roads hazardous.

In some locations, around seven centimetres of snow fell in just a few hours, catching many road users off guard and leading to difficult driving conditions during the day.

The weather also had an impact beyond the roads, with several local sports fixtures cancelled due to snow-covered pitches and concerns for player and spectator safety.

Weather forecasters have urged motorists to take extra care, allow more time for journeys and check conditions before travelling, as temperatures remain low and icy patches are possible.

Local authorities continue to monitor the situation, with gritters deployed on main routes as conditions allow. Further updates are expected if the wintry weather continues into the coming days.
