Halesworth and Leiston residents have expressed concern following the closure of Coopers store — and the loss of each town’s Post Office service housed inside.
The long-standing local business has now shut its doors, prompting disappointment and worry among the community. Many residents have contacted Halesworth and Leiston Town Council's by phone and email to share their concerns and ask what can be done to protect essential services.
In a statement, Leiston Town Council said it was saddened to hear of the closure and extended sympathies to the store’s owners and staff. The council described the loss of both the shop and the Post Office as “a real concern” for local people who rely on them.
Town councillors confirmed they will be writing to the local Member of Parliament and District Councillors to raise the issue and seek support for maintaining postal services in Leiston.
The council said it “shares the concerns of the community” and will push for solutions to ensure residents are not left without access to key services.
Coopers has been a fixture in Leiston for many years, serving as both a local store and a Post Office counter. Its closure marks the end of an era for many who depended on it for everyday needs and financial transactions.
The future of Post Office provision in Leiston is now uncertain, with residents and local representatives calling for urgent action to restore a service many consider essential.
