New Look for Historic Lowestoft Building

A historic cottage in Lowestoft’s Belle Vue Park has been given a fresh lease of life after re-thatching work was successfully completed.

Lowestoft Town Council has confirmed the project is now finished and says it is delighted with the results. The work focused on restoring the cottage’s traditional thatched roof, an important feature of the building and a familiar sight for park visitors.

The re-thatching was carried out by Master Thatcher Nick Walker, who used historic photographs of the cottage to help guide the work. The images provided valuable insight into how the roof would have looked in the past, allowing the restoration to remain true to the building’s original character.

Town council representatives say the completed work not only improves the appearance of the cottage but also helps preserve an important part of Belle Vue Park’s heritage for future generations.

Belle Vue Park is a popular green space in Lowestoft, and the thatched cottage is one of its most distinctive features. The restoration forms part of ongoing efforts to care for historic structures within the park and ensure they remain safe and visually appealing.

Visitors are now able to see the finished work in place, with the newly thatched roof blending traditional craftsmanship with careful attention to historical detail.
