Rail passengers in east Suffolk are being advised to plan ahead this autumn, with major track renewals and bridge repairs taking place between Ipswich and Halesworth.
The work begins this weekend and continues on several dates through to mid-December. During these periods, buses will replace trains between Ipswich and Halesworth, while train services will continue to operate between Halesworth and Lowestoft.
Replacement bus dates:
- Saturday 25 October to Sunday 2 November (nine-day closure)
- 15–16, 22–23, 29–30 November
- 6–7 and 14 December (14 December applies between Westerfield and Woodbridge only)
Network Rail says the work is essential to maintain safe and reliable services across the East Suffolk Line.
As part of the project, several level crossings will also be temporarily closed, including Melton Station, Ufford, and Beversham, at various times between late October and early December.
Drivers using the A1152 at Melton and nearby routes are advised to allow extra time and follow signed diversions during the closures.
The improvements include renewing track, repairing bridges, and upgrading crossings to reduce maintenance needs and improve reliability.
Full details, including replacement bus timetables and level crossing closure times, can be found from East Suffolk Lines.
