Residents across East Suffolk will soon be able to step inside historic buildings and explore the district’s past as Heritage Open Days returns this September.
Running from Friday 12th to Sunday 21st September, the free national festival celebrates history, architecture and culture, with this year’s theme shining a spotlight on iconic buildings and hidden gems.
Events are taking place across the district, supported by East Suffolk Council grants of up to £500 to encourage community participation. Ten local organisations received funding to stage activities, including RSPB Minsmere’s “Operation Zebra,” Lowestoft’s Heritage Skills Market, and archive tours at the Marina Theatre. Other highlights include Bungay, Beccles and Halesworth’s joint brochure of events and model railway displays at Blythburgh Station.
Cllr Sarah Whitelock, cabinet member for Communities, Culture, Leisure and Tourism, said: “By spotlighting the people, places and traditions that have shaped our district, we hope to keep our heritage alive and pass it on to the next generation.”
Heritage Open Days Marketing Manager Liam Montgomery added: “East Suffolk has so much to offer — from iconic landmarks to hidden treasures. This year’s architecture theme gives people a chance to explore the places they pass every day in a new light.”
Some events require pre-booking. Full details, dates and times are available at www.heritageopendays.org.uk and on the events pages of the East Suffolk One website.
