New images have been revealed showing how Lowestoft railway station could be transformed with the reinstatement of its historic concourse roof.
The designs, commissioned by the Lowestoft Central Project and the Wherry Lines Community Rail Partnership, show a large double-apex roof over the main concourse of the Suffolk station, with additional canopies over all three platforms. The proposals draw on the station’s Victorian heritage and similar railway buildings elsewhere in the region.
Supporters say reinstating the roof would provide much-needed shelter for passengers while also creating a unique multi-use space capable of hosting events, exhibitions and community activities. The station’s central location, close to the town centre, port and seafront, is seen as a major opportunity to boost tourism by rail.
Fundraising has already taken place to allow the design concepts to be produced. The next stage will be to raise further funds to develop full architectural plans, which can then be costed before seeking larger funding opportunities.
Lowestoft station, once had an extensive roof structure which survived for more than a century before being demolished. The new proposal has been designed as a self-supporting structure to minimise impact on the remaining historic buildings, while also allowing for modern features such as discreet solar slates and rainwater harvesting.
The station has already undergone significant improvements in recent years, including restored historic spaces, community facilities and a volunteer-run rail and tourist information shop. It has also hosted exhibitions, fairs and special events, attracting large visitor numbers.
Project leaders say reinstating the roof could protect existing buildings, encourage further regeneration and make the station a destination in its own right. The proposed images will be displayed publicly at Lowestoft railway station later this winter.
