We will be taking part with the Heritage Open Days 2025 theme of Architecture, telling the story of our town's bridges:

    ◾️Who built them

    ◾️Why they were built

    ◾️How they were built

    ◾️Their impact

Today many local people don’t know that the cut from the sea to Lake Lothing is not a natural passage but man made!

While Lake Lothing divides the town into North and South sections and connects to The Broads, it is a harbour and the original town of Lothingland was an island that is no longer surrounded by water. More on that available at the exhibition.

Lowestoft has had five bridges; the first having opened in June 1830 and was classed as obsolete the minute it opened!

The final bridge being opened very recently in 2024 - the much acclaimed and long-awaited Gull Wing Bridge.

We will be exhibiting a photographic timeline exhibition detailing the complete history from 1830 to the present day, an interesting timeline of events.
