Suffolk Coast Defence Work

Safety upgrades planned for coastal structures between Hopton and Lowestoft

Work is underway this week on replacing navigation markers along the coast between Hopton and Ness Point in Lowestoft.

The project, led by East Suffolk Council’s Coastal Management Team, will see specialist contractors Red7Marine remove existing markers from the ends of groynes and install new ones on replacement piles.

The improvements are designed to maintain safe navigation for vessels operating close to the shoreline. Navigation markers play an important role in helping boats avoid hazards near coastal defences.

The works are scheduled to take place until Friday 29th August, including over the weekend and bank holiday Monday. All operations will be carried out from a barge at sea, meaning there will be no impact on public access to beaches during this period.

The project is part of ongoing efforts to ensure coastal structures remain safe and effective for both maritime and public use.

An East Suffolk Council spokesperson said the scheme will strengthen navigation safety without affecting residents or visitors using the beaches.

Further information and updates about the works are available from the Coastal Management Team.
