Plans are underway to put Lowestoft forward as a contender in the UK Town of Culture competition, with The Seagull Theatre in Pakefield leading the early stages of the bid.
The theatre has confirmed it is working alongside a wide range of partner organisations to develop a submission, with support from East Suffolk Council and local MP Jess Asato. Initial meetings have already taken place to begin shaping how the town could present its cultural offer.
The UK Town of Culture competition was launched by the Government to encourage economic growth and increase opportunities through arts and culture. The winning town will deliver a programme of events, performances and activities designed to showcase local identity and attract investment.
As part of the preparation process, organisers say they want to gather views from across the community to help shape the Lowestoft proposal. The Seagull has committed to engaging with grassroots organisations and residents to ensure the bid reflects a wide range of local voices.
Two public sessions have been scheduled for people interested in getting involved or sharing ideas. One will take place at the Battery of Ideas on London Road North during the afternoon, while another will be held at The Seagull Theatre on Morton Road in the evening.
Anyone with an interest in culture in Lowestoft is being encouraged to attend and contribute to discussions about what should be included in the town’s submission.
The deadline for entries to the UK Town of Culture competition is set for the end of March, with further engagement expected in the coming weeks as the bid develops.
