The Gansey sweater is a traditional, hard-wearing, seamless sweater worn by Fishermen who spent their days at sea. It has been a practical knitted garment for hundreds of years. Knitted by fishermen’s wives and Fisher Girls, patterns varied from port to port.
This exhibition displays the results of many years of research in the form of photographs, miniature examples of the garment itself, and lots of interesting information.
Running from Thursday 7th August to Sunday 7th September, this exhibition is complementary to the proceeding ‘Following the Fish’ pop-up exhibition (stories of the Herring Fisher Girls), and Trailer on Tour – ‘Anchors Away: Suffolk and The Sea Exhibition’. See our Events for details.
Admission is included in usual museum entrance fees. Booking is not necessary.
Free parking in Whapload Road alongside the museum or car park opposite. Disabled access. WC available.
