New powers aimed at reducing anti-social behaviour in Lowestoft have been formally approved by East Suffolk Council.
A revised Public Space Protection Order (PSPO) will replace the existing order covering the Harbour ward, following a decision by the council’s Cabinet. The updated order is designed to better reflect current issues reported by residents and Suffolk Police.
The strengthened measures include restrictions targeting behaviours such as the dangerous use of e-scooters and e-bikes, public urination, spitting, threatening or aggressive conduct, and the use of face coverings intended to conceal identity while engaging in anti-social behaviour.
East Suffolk Council says these concerns have been raised consistently within the community, with police highlighting cases where individuals have used face coverings while involved in nuisance or aggressive incidents.
The new PSPO will run for three years and will be reviewed annually to ensure it continues to address local priorities. The council says this process will allow conditions to be amended, removed or strengthened if needed.
Over the coming weeks, signage will be installed across the designated area so that residents, businesses and visitors are aware of the updated restrictions.
The order is intended to support ongoing work to improve community safety in one of Lowestoft’s busiest areas, while giving authorities clearer powers to respond to behaviour that affects people living, working and visiting the town centre.
