Suffolk Fire and Rescue Service has announced an additional firefighter taster session following unprecedented demand from people keen to join the service as full-time, permanent firefighters.
The free, one-hour virtual event will take place on Tuesday 9 September at 6pm via Microsoft Teams. It is open to anyone aged 18 or over, with no upper age limit and no requirement to live in Suffolk.
The service ran a series of in-person and online sessions in August, which attracted strong interest. Attendees heard about the realities of a firefighter’s work, the recruitment process and training, and those at fire stations were able to meet serving crews and see equipment up close.
The popularity of these sessions has led to the addition of one final virtual event, with places available on a first-come, first-served basis. Registration is through Eventbrite.
Attendance at a taster session is required for anyone intending to apply later this month, ensuring candidates fully understand the role before beginning the recruitment process.
Martyn Hazelwood, Recruitment and Retention Manager, said: “This is the last chance to get a proper insight into what life is like as a firefighter in Suffolk. Many people are surprised to learn it’s not just about tackling fires, but also about wider community safety.”
Cllr Steve Wiles, Suffolk County Council’s Cabinet Member for Public Health and Public Protection, added: “The level of interest shows how highly the role of firefighter is valued in Suffolk.”
