£707k Grant Secured to Restore Lowestoft Town Hall

Lowestoft Town Council has secured over £700,000 in funding from Historic England to support the restoration of the town’s iconic Town Hall.

The £707,000 grant, awarded through the Heritage at Risk Capital Fund, will help cover vital conservation work — including repairs to the roof, historic windows, and building façade. The project aims to bring the long-standing building back into everyday use for the community.

Once complete, the restored Town Hall will feature a heritage hub, gallery space, café, co-working offices, and community event areas. The site will also serve as a wedding and reception venue, and the new layout will include accessible facilities such as a Changing Places room and lift access.

Cllr Nasima Begum, Mayor of Lowestoft, said: “The Town Hall is an iconic heritage building with huge potential. We’re grateful to Historic England and everyone who has supported the project so far.”

Historic England’s Tony Calladine added that the funding will help “save this important local landmark and give it a new future.”

The Town Hall will also house Lowestoft Town Council offices and host Suffolk Registrars, offering a wide range of civic services under one roof.

The project is part of a wider regeneration initiative supported by The National Lottery Heritage Fund, Towns Fund, East Suffolk Council, and Historic England.

Work is ongoing to develop the site into a fully accessible and vibrant space for residents, visitors, and local businesses.
