Aldeburgh Museum - Heritage Open Days - 'Everyday Histories'.

Come and discover Aldeburgh’s rich and diverse history, displayed in the town’s iconic Moot Hall, a timber framed, Grade 1 listed Tudor building. Among our many treasures are amazing finds from the Anglo Saxon ship burial at Snape and the more recent excavations at Barbers Point including an Anglo-Saxon Claw Beaker. On display will be a couple ledgers from local Aldeburgh builder W C Reade, our most recent acquisition. These are currently being sorted and worked through by a small team and this will be the first time they will be on public display. There is a new addition to the short fireplace films; ‘Aldeburgh in WWII’ and a brand new flip book all about the iconic Moot Hall. Learn about ‘Dark Side’ of the building and it’s connection to the Witch Trials. Can you spot any of the symbols carved by the witches on the timber beams? It’s hard to believe but there were six shops housed in the Moot Hall once upon a time, today there is only one shop with something for everyone.

For our younger visitors; see what you’d look like dressed as a Mayor, have fun solving our Discovery trail, colouring and pick up a FREE ‘Snooks’ walking trail, Aldeburgh’s favourite, always dressed for the occasion, dog.

Aldeburgh’s Moot Hall is a Grage 1 listed, timber framed, Tudor building built for local governance and is still in use for that today. On two floors, the upper floor is the Council Chamber and museum and the downstairs houses the town clerks and a museum room. Originally standing in the centre of the town, coastal erosion means that today the Moot Hall closer to the sea. Meaning ‘Meeting Place’, the Moot Hall is of national importance being one of the best preserved 16th Century buildings in Britain.
