An iconic building on the Suffolk coast is set to be demolished, following confirmation from the Orfordness Lighthouse Trust, which owns the structure.

The lighthouse has stood for 228 years but after surviving the elements for more than two centuries, the owners have said that they have long-known this day would come.

Following a site inspection earlier this year, East Suffolk Council’s Building Control team advised the Orfordness Lighthouse Company that the structure was in a dangerous condition, due to exposed foundations on the entrance porch and a void between the base of these foundations and the ground.

Officers also advised that the main lighthouse was a potentially dangerous structure and consideration should be given to its long-term future.

East Suffolk Council added that: ‘It is sad to see such a historic feature disappear from our coastline – however it is not unexpected. Our Building Control team will continue to liaise with the owners to ensure appropriate action is taken.
